5K walk to benefit New Jersey tent-city residents

Seventy-five miles from the Main Line is a community of residents who live in tents without electricity and running water, hidden in the woods out of sight from the road.

The residents of that tent city are always on the mind of Wayne resident Sean Guiney, who eight months ago established an organization to help get them jobs, into apartments and back on track.

Please go to
www.mainlinemedianews.com and type in 5K walk to benefit New Jersey tent-city, and read the rest of the article.

Thanks to Sam Strike for writing the story.

Conference Looks At Growing Problem Of Homelessness In Kansas City

The Kansas City census in early 2009 found many homeless are living on the streets or in shelters, showed 13,000 people were homeless, that's highest count the city has ever seen.
Not only are the numbers growing, but the face is changing. More than half of the recently surveyed were homeless for the first time and more and more are children.
The Friday conference on homelessness had a ambitious goal. Chief of police Jim Corwin said, we can no longer afford to do nothing. He said the police recieve 25 calls each day from the homeless for help..

Delays Holding Up food Stamps

More people need food stamps than ever before, but there are fewer state workers in Pennsylvania to process the claims; this may result in applicants missing out on benefits, according to anti-hunger advocates.
"Folks need services, and Department of Public Welfare workers don't have enough help. This is a nightmare. Both sides are ready to scream.
Department workers are on the front lines of the reccession, charged with following strict laws and regulations regarding public assistance, all the while dealing with frightened and frustrated clients.

Cities Tolerate Homeless Camps

Nashville is one of several U.S. cities that these days are accommodating the homeless and their encampments, instead of dispersing them. In Florida, Hillsborough County plans to consider a proposal Tuesday by Catholic Charities to run a emergency tent city in Tampa for more than 200 people. A church in Lacey, Wash., near the capitol of Olympia, recently started a homeless camp in its parking lot after the city changed local ordinances to permit it. The City Council in Ventura, Calif., last month revised its laws to permit sleeping in cars overnight in some areas.

Thousands Wait in Line For Health Care That's Free

Inglewood Cailf.- They came for new teeth mostly, but also for blood pressure checks, mammograms, immunizations and acupuncture for pain.

For the second day in a row, thousands of people lined up on Wednesday - starting after midnight and snaking into the early hours - for free dental, medical and vision services, courtesy of a nonprofit group that more typically provides mobile health care for the rural poor. Many of those here said they lacked insurance, but many others said they had coverage but not enough to meet all their needs - or that they could afford.
